What Is Snow Mushroom — and Why Is It Suddenly in Every K-Beauty Serum?
Snow mushroom — Tremella fuciformis — is a translucent, gelatinous fungus that's been eaten across East Asia for centuries. In traditional Chinese and Korean medicine, it was prized as a beauty food: Yang Guifei, one of the Four Beauties of ancient China, reportedly credited her complexion to it. Now it's showing up in serums, essences, and sheet masks as a plant-derived humectant that rivals hyaluronic acid. The active component is a branched polysaccharide — a long sugar chain studded with hydroxyl and acetyl groups that form hydrogen bonds with water molecules, trapping moisture in a gel-like matrix on the skin's surface.

How Does Tremella Compare to Hyaluronic Acid in Lab Studies?
The most-cited comparison comes from a 2021 study published in Food Science and Human Wellness. Researchers tested cosmetic formulations containing 0.05% Tremella polysaccharide against formulations with 0.02% hyaluronic acid. Result: Tremella held moisture in the stratum corneum at least as well as HA — and slightly better in their experimental setup. The polysaccharide also upregulated gene expression for natural moisturizing factors in keratinocytes, including filaggrin and aquaporin-3 — proteins that help skin manage its own water balance from the inside.
Does Snow Mushroom Have Benefits Beyond Hydration?
Yes — and this is where Tremella starts to pull ahead of HA on paper. Hyaluronic acid is a one-trick molecule: it binds water, and it does it brilliantly. But it doesn't offer antioxidant protection. Tremella polysaccharide does. A study showed it suppresses hydrogen-peroxide-triggered damage in human skin fibroblasts via upregulation of SIRT1 — a longevity-associated protein. Another found it protects dermal fibroblasts from UVA-induced photodamage by activating the Nrf2/Keap1 pathway, one of the skin's key antioxidant defense systems.
- Hydration
- Water-binding via hydroxyl/acetyl groups. Comparable to HA in stratum corneum moisture retention.
- Antioxidant
- Activates Nrf2/Keap1 antioxidant pathway. Protects fibroblasts from UVA-induced stress. HA does not do this.
- Barrier Support
- Upregulates filaggrin and aquaporin-3 — proteins that help skin manage its own water balance internally.
- Texture
- Lighter, less sticky feel than high-molecular-weight HA. Absorbs quickly without residue.
What Should You Look For in a Snow Mushroom Product?
Not all Tremella products are created equal. The ingredient list might say "Tremella Fuciformis Sporocarp Extract" or "Tremella Fuciformis Polysaccharide" — the polysaccharide form is the one with the published hydration data. Extract is broader and may contain less of the active polysaccharide. Look for it in the top third of the ingredient list, and ideally paired with a complementary humectant like glycerin or low-molecular-weight HA to work at different layers of the stratum corneum.

- Nrf2/Keap1 항산화 경로 활성화.
- COSRX Balancium Comfort Ceramide Cream —
- Mixsoon Mushroom Essence —
- Beauty of Joseon Glow Deep Serum (Rice + Arbutin) —
