Niacinamide Is in Everything. So Why Is It Breaking Some People Out?
It is the most popular active in K-beauty. But for some skin, niacinamide causes bumps, redness, and congestion. The answer is usually not the ingredient — it is the concentration.

What does niacinamide actually do for skin?
Niacinamide — also called nicotinamide — is a form of vitamin B3. It is one of the most versatile and well-studied actives in skincare. At the right concentration, research associates it with support for the skin barrier through increased ceramide production, a more even-looking skin tone, visible pore refinement through sebum regulation, and improved skin texture over time. It is water-soluble, stable, and plays well with most other actives — which is why K-beauty brands put it in everything from toners to sunscreens.
- Ceramide production
- Niacinamide is associated with increased ceramide synthesis — the lipids that hold your skin barrier together.
- Sebum regulation
- Studies suggest 2-5% niacinamide helps balance oil production without stripping the skin.
- Tone evenness
- Associated with a more even appearance of skin tone over 8-12 weeks of consistent use.
Is it purging — or is your skin just irritated?
This is the key question. Purging happens when an active ingredient speeds up cell turnover, bringing existing clogs to the surface faster. Retinoids and AHAs do this. Niacinamide does not. A 2024 review in Antioxidants confirmed that niacinamide has no significant effect on keratinocyte proliferation — meaning it does not accelerate turnover. So if your niacinamide serum is giving you bumps, it is not purging. It is almost certainly irritation.
Why does 10% niacinamide cause more problems than 5%?
Most clinical research showing benefits uses concentrations between 2% and 5%. Yet the market has drifted toward 10%, 15%, even 20% — driven by the assumption that more is better. It is not. Higher concentrations increase the likelihood of irritation, particularly on sensitive or barrier-compromised skin. The irony: niacinamide at 5% supports the barrier. At 10%+, it can overwhelm it — especially if your barrier is already weakened from retinoids, over-exfoliation, or harsh cleansers.
- 2-5% concentration
- The sweet spot backed by most research. Supports barrier, balances oil, evens tone — with minimal irritation risk.
- 10%+ concentration
- Higher is not always better. Increased risk of redness, bumps, and barrier disruption — especially on compromised skin.
What should you do if niacinamide is breaking you out?
First: check the concentration. If you are using 10% or higher, switch to a 4-5% formula before abandoning the ingredient entirely. Many people who react to high-concentration niacinamide do perfectly well at lower percentages. Second: check your barrier. If you are also using retinoids, AHAs, or BHAs, your skin may be too sensitized to tolerate niacinamide on top. Simplify first, reintroduce later. Third: check the formula. Some niacinamide products contain other potentially irritating ingredients — fragrances, essential oils, or high levels of other actives. The niacinamide itself may not be the problem.
Which K-beauty niacinamide products get the concentration right?
The best K-beauty niacinamide products tend to keep concentrations in the effective-but-gentle range and pair niacinamide with barrier-supporting co-ingredients like panthenol, ceramides, or propolis.
- Beauty of Joseon Glow Serum: Propolis + Niacinamide — 2% niacinamide paired with propolis extract — gentle enough for sensitive skin, associated with glow and tone evenness.
- COSRX The Niacinamide 15% Serum — High-concentration option for resilient skin. Start with every other day and build up — not ideal for sensitive or barrier-compromised skin.
- Anua Heartleaf 80% Soothing Ampoule — Contains niacinamide at a lower percentage alongside heartleaf extract — a soothing option for reactive skin that still wants niacinamide benefits.

- Beauty of Joseon Glow Serum: Propolis + Niacinamide — 2%
- COSRX The Niacinamide 15% Serum —
- Anua Heartleaf 80% Soothing Ampoule —
