Your Sunscreen's SPF Number Is Only Half the Story. Here's What PA++++, UVA-PF, and Critical Wavelength Actually Mean.
By J. Yoo
SPF measures protection against sunburn. It says nothing about the UV rays that cause wrinkles, dark spots, and long-term skin changes. Here's how to read the other half of the label.

What does SPF actually measure — and what does it miss?
SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor. It measures one thing: how long UVB rays take to redden your skin compared to unprotected skin. SPF 30 means it takes roughly 30 times longer to burn. SPF 50 means 50 times longer. But sunlight contains two types of UV radiation that reach your skin. UVB (290–320 nm) is the short-wave type that causes sunburn — the thing SPF measures. UVA (320–400 nm) is the long-wave type that penetrates deeper into the dermis. UVA doesn't burn you the way UVB does, but it's responsible for the majority of photoaging — wrinkles, loss of firmness, uneven tone — and it drives melanin production that leads to dark spots and hyperpigmentation. A sunscreen can have SPF 50 and still offer mediocre UVA protection. The SPF number literally says nothing about it. This is why every major sunscreen market except the United States has developed a separate UVA rating system.
- UVB
- 290–320 nm — causes sunburn, measured by SPF
- UVA
- 320–400 nm — drives photoaging, pigmentation, and deep skin changes
- 95%
- of UV radiation reaching Earth's surface is UVA — present year-round, even on cloudy days
What do PA++++, PPD, UVA-PF, and Boots stars mean?
Different countries measure UVA protection differently. Here's the decoder ring:
- PA++++ (Asia — Korea, Japan)
- The PA system uses plus signs to grade UVA protection, based on the PPD (Persistent Pigment Darkening) test — how long UVA takes to darken your skin. PA+ = PPD 2–4. PA++ = PPD 4–8. PA+++ = PPD 8–16. PA++++ = PPD 16+. PA++++ is the highest grade and means the sunscreen delays UVA-induced tanning by at least 16 times. This is the system you'll see on every Korean and Japanese sunscreen.
- UVA-PF (Europe — ISO standard)
- The UVA Protection Factor is the European equivalent, tested under ISO 24443 (in vitro) or ISO 24442 (in vivo). European regulations require that a sunscreen's UVA-PF must be at least 1/3 of its SPF — so an SPF 50 product must have a UVA-PF of at least ~17. Products meeting this standard display the UVA logo (the letters UVA inside a circle).
- Boots Star Rating (UK)
- Developed by Boots in 1992, this system rates the ratio of UVA to UVB protection on a 1–5 star scale. Five stars means UVA protection is 90% or more of the SPF value. Important caveat: because it's a ratio, a low-SPF product can still earn 5 stars. Look for 4–5 stars combined with SPF 30+.
- Critical Wavelength (USA)
- The US doesn't use PA or UVA-PF. Instead, a sunscreen labeled "Broad Spectrum" must pass the critical wavelength test — absorbing UV up to at least 370 nm. This is a pass/fail threshold, not a graded scale — it tells you the sunscreen covers some UVA, but not how much. Two "Broad Spectrum SPF 50" products can have wildly different UVA protection levels.
Why do Korean sunscreens score so well on UVA protection?
Korea and Japan require PA rating on all sunscreens — which means manufacturers must actually test and declare their UVA performance. This creates a competitive dynamic where brands race to achieve PA++++ (the highest possible grade) as a marketing differentiator. But there's a deeper reason: Korea and Japan approve UV filters that the US FDA hasn't cleared. Filters like Tinosorb S, Tinosorb M, Uvinul A Plus, and Mexoryl SX/XL offer broader, more stable UVA coverage than the limited set available in American sunscreens. We covered this in detail in our piece on Korean sunscreens and their "illegal" filters. The result is that a typical Korean SPF 50+/PA++++ sunscreen delivers measurably higher UVA protection than most US "Broad Spectrum SPF 50" equivalents — not because of marketing, but because of the regulatory framework and available filter technology.

UVA(320~400nm)는 진피 깊숙이 침투하는 장파예요.
- UVB
- UVA
PA+ = PPD 2~4. PA++ = PPD 4~8. PA+++ = PPD 8~16. PA++++ = PPD 16+.
